As the years go by and the visit of a party of Cologne children to Redditch each Easter becomes more and more part of the normal life of the town,

The number of the visitors is rapidly increasing; this year a total of 42 German guests is visiting the town on the annual exchange link with Redditch County High School. The party is led for the first time this year by Herr Zervas, who has taken over the reins from Herr Alsbach since the latter’s retirement last year.
Besides the now traditional visits to Cadbury’s, Stratford, Coventry and Worcester, the party had a special trip this year to Blenheim Palace. The weather was not by any means ideal for such a trip, but al least there was no rain, and members of the group were able to walk around the gardens and park, after seeing the Palace itself in a guided tour. They were particularly interested in the room in which Sir Winston Churchill was born, and also in the organ in the Palace library.
In Birmingham, the party was welcomed by councillor Bond, Chairmen of the House Building Committee, who gave a talk on the new areas of the city, and answered questions put by both German and English guests, particularly connected with the Redditch New Town. The same problems were discussed from the Redditch side when the party was given an official reception at the Council House by the Chairman of the Council.
This year’s theatre visit was to the Birmingham Repertory Theatre for “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” and members of the party who had been two years ago were able to compare this production with one they had seen in Stratford on that visit. The Stratford production had laid great emphasis on clarity in the main plot, whereas in Birmingham the stress seemed to be on the slapstick possibilities of the “play within a play.”
The party will return home on Monday morning - to prepare for the visit of the English party in the summer. Meanwhile, some of them will be meeting the two Redditch students who are working in Cologne for three months at the City Savings Bank - because one of the advantages of the exchange is that it can lead to students from each side spending far more than a fortnight in the other country.
