- The Bundeshaus
The 'Bundeshaus' is situated on the banks of the Rhine. The building was originally a Teachers' Training College. I had never seen the 'Bundeshaus'. Thus the reader will appreciate how surprised, indeed, pleasantly surprised I was to behold the clean, white and black lines of the modern block that is the German House of Parliament. No warm, delicately carved stone piles and towering columns steeped in tradition, rather an example of contemporary German architecture, whose
stark and simple lines thrust from the very ea'-th towards the wide clear sky, the spearhead of German Freiheit, Gerechtigkeit and Solidarität; whose proud gaze seats upon the swiftly flowing Rhine laden with powerful barges. From Square, white cornerstone to broad sheetglass, all is stamped with the hallmark of purpose. Inside is no musty aroma wafting down the ages. The corridors are brightly lit, wide, Square sectioned, clinically clean, each with regularly positioned doorways to left and right Herr Abgeordneter X (CDU) Herr Abgeordneter Y (SPD). A secretary hurries by, slips noiselessly, efficiently out of sight. Efficiency, purpose hang in the air. We were very much impressed by the Plenary Hall of the 'Bundeshaus'. Here the members of the Bundestag meet. The President's chair is in the middle and behind his seat is the German Flag. There is a gallery for diplomats and guests, for press reporters and photographers, and a gallery for the public. On the front wall we see the Federal Eagle. The seats for the members of the Bundestag are arranged in a semi-circle, banks of hard, black school-type desks - no plush seats for slumbering ministers here. The parties from left to right are SPD (Social Democrats) CDU/CSU (Christian Democrats, Christian Social Union) and FDP (Free Democrats). The party leaders take the front seats and behind them sit the other members of the party. There are also seats for the deputies of 'Land Berlin'. Artificial daylight comes from a System of neon lighting. There are loud-speakers to transmit Speeches.
Microphones in the Hall allow the members to put their questions from their seats. Everything is in the most modern style.

Das englische Parlament besteht aus dem Unterhaus (House of Commons) und dem Oberhaus (House of Lords). Die Eröffnung des Parlaments ist mit althergebrachten Formalitäten verbunden, gewöhnlich eröffnet die Königin die neue Sitzungsperiode, und zwar mit der Verlesung der Thronrede. Das Unterhaus wird alle fünf Jahre gewählt und besteht aus 628 M. P. (Members of Parliament). Das Wahlalter ist auf 18 Jahre herabgesetzt worden. Die zwei Hauptparteien sind Tories
and Labour, dazu gesellt sich eine dritte: die Liberale Partei. Gewöhnlich verfügt eine der beiden Hauptparteien über eine Mehrheit im Hause. Eine Kommunistische Partei ist im Parlament nicht vertreten, obwohl es eine Kommunistische Partei gibt.
Die Anzahl der Frauen im englischen Parlament ist nicht sehr groß. Etwa 20.
