The City Savings Bank
The Visit to the "Sparkasse" was very interesting. First we saw a film describing the rather development of this modern banking Institute and its history. In almost every district of the city there is a branch After the film we split up into parties of ten and had a conducted tour of the bank. We saw the most modern equipment which a bank of today must have in order to guarantee a quick and secure Service. The Bank has a direct emergency line to the Police in case of break In or theft.
Outside the vast building we were shown a fountain that held three figures; that of the miser, the couldn't-care-less and the saver. We were taken to the drive-in bank for motorists. This building is made of bullet-proof glass and there is a System of checking that cheques are valid by a video-system. Also, there was a room where all documents were kept. This was air conditioned with a very low humidity so that they were kept in perfect condition.
The System of lifts was quite new to us, having to jump on when possible and jump off again. Most of us were cautious and didn't want to venture onto such unknown devices, but plucking up courage, two by two, we descended. We entered a room with long tables covered with white tablecloths. After having a marvellous tea and receiving a gift of a biro, notebook and postcard we were again officially welcomed and speeches began. We sang some Community songs and danced to a band.

1 Die Bank von England (entsprechend der Bundesbank) besteht seit 1697. Das Bankwesen in England ist äußerst wichtig,
das erkennt man an den großen Riesenpalästen, von denen es sehr viele gibt. Die bedeutendsten Banken sind Lloyds, Barclays, Midland. Westminster und National Provincial.
In England gibt es zu Weihnachten, Ostern und Pfingsten nur einen religiösen Feiertag, der zweite ist gewöhnlich „bank holiday" ein Feiertag, eingeführt seit 1874 (Karfreitag, Ostermontag, Pfingstmontag, der letzte Montag im August und der 26. oder 27. Dezember). An diesen sog. Bankfeiertagen sind die meisten Engländer unterwegs. Theater, die sonst an Sonntagen geschlossen sind, sind an diesen Tagen offen.
Das englische Geld ist seit ein paar Jahren umgeändert worden. Der alte „Shilling" ist verschwunden und ist in neuer Umrechnung zu fünf neuen „pence" umgewertet worden. Das englische Pfund hat 100 neue „pence". Die Börse (stock exchange) hat großen Einfluß. Das Pfund, das ursprünglich einen Wert von 20 Mark hatte, ist jetzt knapp 6 DM wert.
Die Kölner Sparkasse ist seit dem Beginn des Austausches mit dieser Idee eng verbunden. Jedes Jahr werden die Teilnehmer dieses Austausches mit Eltern und Freunden zu einem Empfang eingeladen und offiziell von dem Schulamt begrüßt. Dieser Empfang ist eine Tradition geworden.
