The new Cologne

The new Cologne theatre and opera house is another building of extremely modern design. Also in the centre of the city, a few minutes' walk from the theatre, is the "Hohestrasse", a narrow, cobbled street lined with the most exclusive and expensive Shops in the city. It is a wonderful street for window-shopping, but not the ideal place to buy Souvenirs. This Street is a "no thoroughfare" for all vehicles, including bicycles, and the people wander leisurely through, often in the middle of the road, stopping occasionally to admire a window display.

The big Stores in Cologne are very similar to those in a large English city such as London or Birmingham. In these many- storied buildings one can buy everything one could possibly wish to buy, from sausages to shoelaces. In some of these Stores there are both escalators and lifts to travel from floor to floor, in others there are escalators for upward travel and ordinary Steps for downward travel.

In spite of all the rebuilding in Cologne on can still see many traces of the terrible bombing and other damage which the city received during the war. One can still see old, overgrown bomb Sites and many buildings in the outskirts of the city have Shellmarks on them.

1. Der Wiederaufbau der von Bomben zerstörten Städte hat in England dazu geführt, neue Stadtteile zu errichten mit Hochhäusern, die in England aus verschiedenen Gründen nicht sehr beliebt sind. Aber da nicht genügend Bauland vorhanden ist, war man genötigt, diese Blocks zu errichten. „My house is my Castle" hat seine Gültigkeit verloren. Diese Hochhäuser haben besondere Spielplätze für die Kinder, da die meisten Gärten dem Wiederaufbau zum Opfer gefallen sind. Aber gleichzeitig haben die Städte versucht, die „slums" (Elendsviertel) durch neue moderne Häuser zu ersetzen. Es wird noch lange dauern, bis sich der Engländer daran gewöhnt hat, in einer Wohnung (flat) zu leben.  
Große Kauf- und Warenhäuser, Supermärkte sind in jeder Stadt zu finden und haben den kleinen Kaufmann verdrängt, da er die hohe Miete nicht aufbringen kann. In fast allen diesen Häusern ist Selbstbedienung.
